Addition and Subtraction Flashcards

Image
Addition and Subtraction Flash Cards Grade Level: 1st This manipulative is useful for students to reinforce addition and subtraction concepts. The flashcards can be used to practice an array of addition and subtraction skills depending on where the students are in the curriculum. For example, a teacher can show an addition flashcard and ask students to draw a part/part/whole diagram, count on using a number line, or solve and write their answer in a laminated speech bubble. Addition or subtraction flashcards can be especially useful for students who are below grade level as extra practice. Moreover, these cards can be displayed for students to respond to in a whole class setting or a small group setting. The flashcards can even be laminated and given to students to write on with a dry-erase marker to be used as an independent practice. Materials: -Addition flashcards -Subtractions flashcards -Whiteboard/Laminated speech bubbles/Blank equations in a sheet protector -Dry-erase mar...

Telling Time in First Grade

Image
Telling Time in First Grade Grade Level: 1st This lesson aims to help first graders conceptualize telling time on an analog clock. At the end of the lesson, they will know the difference between the hour and the minute hand on an analog clock. Objective: Students will be able to tell time using an analog clock.  Materials: -Analog clock -Blank analog clock worksheet in a sheet protector -Dry-erase marker -Whole-hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour worksheets Introduction to telling time: Analog clock and worksheet in a sheet protector Use a real analog clock to demonstrate different times. Adjust the time several times to demonstrate which hand means hours, which hand means minutes, and how to hands rotate around the clock.  Then, give the students several examples of a time and use the worksheet to have them draw the clock hands. By placing the worksheet in a sheet protector the activity can be done, erased, and repeated several times. This allows the teacher greater op...

Concept Math Game: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Half

Image
Concept Math Game: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Half Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Half is a concept math game on the PBS Kids website, presented by the PBS Kids show Cyberchase . The game begins by presenting you with a ‘brain teaser’ which states, “when you think about the fraction ½, you might think of something like this…” and shows a square divided into eight triangles.  The game then explains that are actually 13 different ways the triangles can be filled in to represent ½ and asks you to find all 13 ways.  The game tracks your progress and displays each new way at the top of the screen. This game addresses the concept of fractions. Specifically, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1: understand a fraction 1/ b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a / b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/ b . This concept math game would be most appropriate for third-grade students as the mathematical standard it addr...

Anchor Charts

Image
Anchor Charts Grade Level: 1 An anchor chart is a tool that helps facilitate classroom learning. An anchor chart displays students' and teachers' thoughts, ideas, and processes . Anchor charts can be created as part of a lesson or prior to or following a lesson by the teacher. They can be displayed as reminders of prior learning and built upon over multiple lessons. Anchor charts are extremely valuable tools, especially for the younger grades, as they can scaffold the students by hanging up on the wall. Anchor charts can be used for all grade levels, subjects, and lessons. This is an example of an anchor chart for a first-grade math lesson on a specific lesson, Part-Part-Whole: This is an example of an anchor chart for a first-grade unit that involves several lessons:  These anchor charts are similar to the anchor charts hanging up in the classroom I am currently working in and can speak firsthand to how helpful they are for my first-grade students. When we are building upon a ...

More or Less

More or Less Grade Level: K My goal for this lesson is for Kindergarten students to conceptualize number values and compare them. Objective: Students will be able to identify which number is higher or lower, or if the two numbers are equal, and use the connect symbol to make the identification.  Materials: -Worksheets -Scissors -Glue Students can recall their counting abilities to count the objects in each bubble. Once they know how many objects are in each bubble, they can write the number next to the bubble. This will help them in comparing both a group of objects and single-digit numbers. Worksheets: These are the links to the worksheets: https://www.mathworksheets4kids.com/greater-less-than/cut-paste-pic-frog1.pdf https://www.mathworksheets4kids.com/greater-less-than/cut-paste-pic-bird1.pdf Mathematical Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group,...

IXL Personalized Learning Website

Image
IXL Personalized Learning Website Grade Level: K-12 IXL is an online learning tool that uses a comprehensive curriculum to develop grade-based skill practices and games. This website can be accessed with or without a membership. However, if you do not have a membership there is a daily practice limit.  Objective: Students will receive individualized guidance and real-time analytics, which meet the unique needs of each learner. Each grade features a different number of skill practices, based on the grade level curriculum, that are broad concept topic based. For example, the topic of Counting and Number patterns has 32 different subtopic skills that can be practiced.  This is an example of what one of the skills practices looks like: The practices track how many questions the user has answered, the time the user has spent on the practice, and their “SmartScore” out of 100. A SmartScore is a certain number of points allotted per question that add up to 100. When you get a quest...
