IXL Personalized Learning Website Grade Level: K-12 IXL is an online learning tool that uses a comprehensive curriculum to develop grade-based skill practices and games. This website can be accessed with or without a membership. However, if you do not have a membership there is a daily practice limit.  Objective: Students will receive individualized guidance and real-time analytics, which meet the unique needs of each learner. Each grade features a different number of skill practices, based on the grade level curriculum, that are broad concept topic based. For example, the topic of Counting and Number patterns has 32 different subtopic skills that can be practiced.  This is an example of what one of the skills practices looks like: The practices track how many questions the user has answered, the time the user has spent on the practice, and their “SmartScore” out of 100. A SmartScore is a certain number of points allotted per question that add up to 100. When you get a quest...

Addition with Manipulatives

Addition with Manipulatives Grade Level: 1st My goal for this lesson is to help first graders conceptualize addition through the use of manipulatives, such as objects and pictures. Objective: Students will be able to add using manipulatives and write the addition equation.  Materials: -Two large containers -Red math blocks -Blue math blocks -Dry-erase boards -Worksheets Manipulatives activity: Grab and Add Fill two containers with math cubes, one with red cubes and one with blue cubes. Students will reach into the containers and grab a small handful of cubes from each. They will count the objects and write the addition sentence and sum on a dry-erase board. I.e. if a student pulls six red blocks and 4 blue blocks, the addition sentence will be 6 + 4 = 10.  Worksheets: These are the links to the worksheets: https://www.k5learning.com/free-math-worksheets/first-grade-1/addition/pictures-objects https://www.k5learning.com/free-math-worksheets/first-grade-1/addition/addin...

Counting to 10 on a Number Line

Counting to 10 on a Number Line Grade Level: 2nd My goal for this lesson is to show second graders how to relate addition and subtraction to length by counting to the number ten on a number line. Objective: Students will be able to count ten on a number line with equally spaced points.  Materials: -Large number line -Sticky notes -Number line worksheet -Clear paper sleeves -Dry erase markers Large number line activity: A large number line will be drawn and hung on the wall in the classroom. Students will be given a sticky note with a number between 1 and 10 written on it. Students should already know how to count to 10 and, thus, should know the order in which to place the numbers on the line. Students will be asked to place the sticky note they have on the number line, in order from 1 to 10, equally spaced apart. Worksheet activity: The blank 1-10 number line worksheet attached below should be put into a clear paper sleeve. This will allow the students to label the number line...

Even or Odd?

Even or Odd? Grade Level: 2nd My goal for this lesson is to give second graders a sense of how to determine if a group of objects has an even or odd number of members. This can be done by pairing the objects and/or counting by 2s. If all of the objects can be paired, then the number is even. If there is one object if left over when all of the pairs are made, the number is odd. Objective: Students will be able to categorize even or odd numbers in groups of up to 20. Materials: -Paper bag -Index Cards -Worksheets Paper bag activity: Students will be given two brown paper bags, one labeled even and one labeled odd. Students will also be given an index with a number and corresponding dots to represent the number.  Students will determine if the number written on the card is an even or an odd number by pairing and/or counting by 2s. If the index card displays an odd number of dots, they will place it in the brown paper bag labeled odd. If the index card displays an even n...
