Counting to 10 on a Number Line

Counting to 10 on a Number Line

Grade Level: 2nd

My goal for this lesson is to show second graders how to relate addition and subtraction to length by counting to the number ten on a number line.

Objective: Students will be able to count ten on a number line with equally spaced points.

Materials:

-Large number line

-Sticky notes

-Number line worksheet

-Clear paper sleeves

-Dry erase markers

Large number line activity: A large number line will be drawn and hung on the wall in the classroom. Students will be given a sticky note with a number between 1 and 10 written on it. Students should already know how to count to 10 and, thus, should know the order in which to place the numbers on the line. Students will be asked to place the sticky note they have on the number line, in order from 1 to 10, equally spaced apart.

Worksheet activity: The blank 1-10 number line worksheet attached below should be put into a clear paper sleeve. This will allow the students to label the number line on the paper sleeve with a dry-erase marker and, once their teacher approves of their work, erase what they wrote and practice it again. This allows for repeated practice and easy correction if necessary.

Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, ..., and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram.

  1. Hi Maggie,
I think that this is a great activity for second graders to begin to see math as a continuum. Number lines are a great visual representation of what is actually happening in the number sequence. This is a great way to expose your students to this idea before they inevitably see a number line again when they work with negative integers.
    Best,
    Lily
